What safety precautions has Loudoun Dental Smiles put in place?

When you arrive at our office, we will ask you to use hand sanitizer provided, we will take your temperature, and, finally, we will have you do a pretreatment rinse.

Do I need to schedule an appointment?

Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you are offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment. We ask that you arrive on-time (10 minutes early to allow for proper screening procedures) and please be patient as we master our new workflow

Should I attend my appointment even if I'm not feeling well?

We encourage you to cancel your appointment if you are feeling unwell. There will be no penalty if you provide appropriate notice. If we are not able to verbally confirm your appointment, your appointment may be cancelled or a cancelation fee assessed.

Do I need to complete a pre-appointment health questionnaire?

Yes. In order to keep our patients and our team safe, we require all patients to complete a pre-appointment health questionnaire online before coming to our office.

What should I do when I arrive at the office?

We ask that you wait in your car and contact us at 703-779-7779 to let us know you have arrived. You will be asked those same screening questions again and we will let you know when we are ready for your appointment. A team member will invite you in and escort you directly to our treatment area.

Are face masks required?

Yes! Personal cloth masks will be required for entry. No outside gloves permitted.

Can I wait in the reception area?

Only scheduled patients will be permitted entry. Companions are asked to stay home or in the car unless previously granted permission.

Are all the office amenities still available?

You will see that our bathroom, waiting room and play room will be closed as these areas are difficult to keep clean and disinfected throughout the day. Please use the bathroom facilities in the building lobby next to the elevators.

General FAQs

What precautions do you take to ensure patient safety?

We follow strict guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Our practices include sterilizing reusable instruments in an autoclave, then sealing them for the next use; disinfecting treatment rooms between patient visits; and using disposable products when possible. The whole team always wear disposable gloves during exams and treatment, for your safety.

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Bleeding is usually a sign of a problem. When gums bleed, the cause usually stems from the patient brushing too hard or from early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis. We can consult with you on the proper toothbrush and pressure for safe, effective daily oral care. If your gums show signs of gum disease, we may recommend a deep hygiene treatment to stop the disease and return your gums to good health. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults, and it has been linked to many overall health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and respiratory problems. Untreated, gum disease can escalate to create significant damage to your health, so call for a clinical assessment now. We will help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for life!

I want to know more about changing my smile. What do you suggest?

We suggest a consultation appointment. We offer a wide range of cosmetic services to reshape a person’s smile. Because your smile and your goals are unique to you, please schedule a personal consultation visit free of charge to talk to one of our specially trained cosmetic doctors. At your consultation, we can tell you which services will deliver the smile of your dreams.

My smile is missing teeth. What are my options for replacement teeth?

You’ll need to first schedule a consultation. Dr. Cowell & Dr. Howard can assess your oral health and discuss options for replacement teeth that will restore your chewing ability and create a new smile. In general, you can choose from crown and bridgework, partial or full dentures, or dental implants. As the most likely prosthetic to mimic natural tooth structure, a dental implant usually is the most long-lasting, comfortable, and natural-looking choice.

I want straighter teeth, but I do not want to wear braces. What would you recommend?

Depending on your unique case, we may recommend Invisalign, porcelain, or chairside composite veneers. Learn more about these procedures on the cosmetic dentistry section of our services page.

Do you accept my insurance plan?

We work with almost all insurance plans! We will file your in or out-of-network claim and accept assignment. We always will work with you and your insurance company to make dentistry affordable.

I have not been to the dentist in years, and I’m ashamed to let a professional see the condition of my mouth. Is your staff judgmental?

First of all, congratulations on your wise decision to make dental healthcare a high priority in your life. Your mouth is a big part of your overall health, quality of life, and self-esteem. We will not judge you, but will help you by addressing your oral problems, explaining treatment options, then scheduling a plan of action that suits your schedule and your budget.

What if I have an emergency when the office is closed?

If you have an emergency, please call our office where instructions are available on our voicemail recording to reach our on-call doctor. We take after hour emergencies very seriously, and will either see you or make you comfortable until the office opens depending on your preference. There may be an additional fee if you elect to be seen when our office is closed.
